i4life was born in 2015 as a social initiative in the Polytechnic School of Engineering of Gijón.
On May 2018, it was established as a spin-off of the University of Oviedo.
Our purpose is thanking the elderly for everything they have done for us and thus, trying to adapt the society to their needs.
As an initial step we focused on older people. They could benefit a lot from technology by taking advantage of its facilities. That is i4life’s goal: to make their lives easier and better by means of engineering, by means of easy-to-use solutions.
Newer tendencies agree that older people have to be in the center of every process related to their lives and illness. It’s what nowadays is called “to empower” the patient and to promote preventive, personalised and predictive medical attention. At the moment, we are working on projects concerning several diseases:
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Cardiac and respiratory issues, with special attention to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
Around that diseases i4life has created different solutions that link the patient to their environment (physicians, relatives, caregivers).
With our Parkinson’s disease project, we promote a change in the attention for the affected: with our solutions, patient will receive continued follow-up to make sure that their life quality and medication are correctly fitted. To make this come true, we have developed devices and software to autonomously create a ‘symptom diary’. With the use of machine learning and big data, these devices will be able to make decisions and alerts. With i4life’s management system, patients are connected to their surroundings 24 hours a day. This way, the neurologist will be informed about the patient’s evolution by receiving alerts if something is wrong. And also the patient’s family and beloved ones will be able to live less concerned, since he or she will be monitored and well care for.
